NeIC Conference 2024 took place at Tallinn from 27th to 29th of May. In the Containers in HPC session, EGI-CSIRT had a talk on Secure Usage of Containers in the HPC environment. We have discussed the security aspects of using containers and the ways in which container workloads can be isolated and secured. We mentioned some of the major vulnerabilities relevant to this area and showed how they could be mitigated with proper configuration, deployment and vulnerability management. Containers are processes on the system and represent the same security threat to the system as any other application. But with the benefits they bring to HPC users, enabling reproducibility, portability and support for both legacy and newer software libraries, they are an essential tool for deploying software in HPC.
